Meet Penelope! (Est DOB 2024) This sweet girl had a rough start when she was dumped in a crate outside of the WaterBark, but thankfully a loving foster opened up her home and her heart to Penelope, who was understandably so scared and confused. Now that she’s had all her vet care and learned how to be a loved little house dog, she’s ready to find her forever home! She is a little thing at 25 pounds, and would make a great companion for someone who spends a lot of time at home. Read below what her foster Mom says about her:
Ms. Penelope is equal parts dachshund, piranha, and Tigger. She is playful, clever, devoted, active, courageous, and stubborn like a dachshund. She is an opportunistic feeder like a piranha. Penny moves by darting and leaping like Tigger.
She is definitely a toddler because everything goes into her mouth. She chews all her food and treats as quickly as she can. Penelope’s sneaky with her food too. She grabs a mouthful of her brother’s food when he’s not looking, frantically chewing as she darts off. She recently learned if the food storage container isn’t sealed shut, she can push the lid off and access the food!
Penny has bonded with one person out of the three she lives with, her foster mom. If anyone walks close to her person she will bark. I think she’s telling them that it is her person. When her foster mom isn’t home, she won’t bark at anyone. She plays quietly with her toys yet prefers interaction with her human. Penelope curls up on a lap or squeezes between the chair and her foster mom’s back while her mom is on the computer.
She has not figured out how to walk on a leash. The silly girl prefers walking in circles than a straight line. She allows herself to be carried sometimes, she just prefers hopping on her two back feet.
Penny enjoys car rides. She has no problem being in her kennel at the back of the car. She will sit in the passenger seat or the back seat when she isn’t allowed in a lap. During two long trips she preferred sitting, squished in her person’s seat.
Penelope would be happiest having a person of her own, whether that is in a household of one or one hundred and one. She seems to prefer people over other animals. Children should be old enough to know how to react when they get nibbled on. Because she thinks biting hands is playing. Her clue to needing to go outside is to stare. We’ve missed her signal a few times, a lack of communication. Her perfect place to sleep would be curled up in a bed with her human. Ms. Penelope/Penny would have her best life by always being with her person.
Penelope has done fine with her foster dog brother, but will greet new dogs with a bark and growl. She could get used to a tolerant and patient dog given time and proper introductions, but definitely prefers to be the star of the show!
